What is this about?
Mobile equipment fires occur regularly in the mining industry and present a significant fatality risk and are potentially catastrophic for underground operations. They also involve considerable costs for mining operators.
This industry project considering improvements in these areas:
- OEM equipment design e.g. separation of flammable liquid systems from heat sources.
- Routine maintenance practices including hot work.
- Coordination of fire detection and suppression systems design and installation between OEM and third-party suppliers.
- Maintenance of fire suppression systems after installation noting that this can be a challenging issue for remote operations.
Is the issue relevant to us?
If your operations use mobile equipment and you are committed to maintaining and improving the reliability of fire prevention and mitigation controls, then this resource can assist you.
The regulator position information provides an overview of industry level performance and should be considered when reviewing your own operations.
